The Burning Music Building

Does anyone have any info/pics of the fire today in the Old Music Building?

On Tuesday January 29, I witnessed how institutionalized the lack of concern our school has for our well being. I sat in a class in Siemens Hall from 12:00 noon until 1:40. At that time I walked out onto the Quad to see multiple emergency vehicles with lights flashing and several small crowds of people gathered behind some rope barricades. It turns out that there was a fire in the music building which was literally less than 50 feet from the class I had just left. From my observation, I guess that the emergency service crews had been there at least 20 minutes. I also was greeted with the smell of smoke that obviously contained chemicals that were not meant to be burned. So my question is...Where was my fire alarm?????

Why were all the students allowed to sit in class while a fire burned in an adjacent building. I don’t need to know how big the fire was, but the fact that there were 4 fire vehicles tells me that was more than a lit pile of matches.

WHERE WAS MY FIRE ALARM?

As far as I know the only cost in springing a fire alarm is the little glass piece that breaks when the alarm has been pulled. Otherwise, you may have some labor costs related to inspecting the building and there could be the issue of lost productivity. If the fire department managed to leave a fire in building, I would be surprised. But as far as the productivity....

I walked into the administration office, (which is the first door on the left when you walk into the top of Siemens Hall) to see if the building had been evacuated yet. The entire staff of this office was looking out the window at the fire being put out. One man came over to me right away, and I asked why the alarm was not going off in the building. His reply was that the fire was in the next building over....Okay, so fire doesn’t spread (rapidly)? Are you going to wait until the building IS on fire before you get everybody out? I am sorry but I feel like my life is worth more than that. The fire alarm is there for a reason, and that is to warn people about fire. When there is a fire in the next building over, GET OUT AND BE SAFE. The man in Siemens Hall instructed me to call Steve Butler, VP of Student Affairs, and I did; only to leave a message. At this point I felt like no one should be in harms way and I pulled the fire alarm myself. I knew one of the guys that walked out of Siemens Hall after that and he was as shocked as me that it had taken that long for the alarm to sound.

SO WHATS THE DEAL. HSU can afford an emergency text message system, but can’t afford pulling a fire alarm? What good is a text message when I turn my phone off in class? Are we so caught up in our own lives that no one, for an extended period of time, thought to warn others that their lives could be in danger. It is better to be SAFE than SORRY.

The HSU website has a news post called “Fire Quickly Contained in The Music Building.” It says, “Neighboring Siemens Hall was evacuated briefly when prevailing winds pushed smoke into the building.” NO. THIS IS WRONG. It was evacuated because I pulled the fire alarm out of concern for my fellow students and teachers.

Needless to say I am disgusted. I have been told that the area that was burned was full of asbestos. I have been sick since Tuesday afternoon, with my lungs in quite a bit of pain. From this point on, I will sit by the doorway in each of my classes because I fear for my safety.
