Regarding the upcoming Battle of the Bands at Jambalaya:
I am ultimately thrilled that we as a station are able to participate in this event for 2008. However, this year's event came at the cost of using a venue that would restrict most of our staff from attending. Our ability to find a suitable venue on campus was diminished by our focus and dedication to rebuilding the station as whole. Basically it got moved to the back burner until the organizers of the SLAMfest reminded us that they would like to continue to support the station by generously donating prize money and spots for the winners on the SLAMfest stage. At that point, we were too late to reserve anything on campus. So, it was either not have a Battle of the Bands or go to an outside venue. If you are under 21, then you already know that Arcata and Eureka have a shortage of under 21 venues.
Almost all of our concerts have traditionally worked despite our lack our resources. We do not have the money to pay for rent, additional PA equipment or the insurance required to host a gathering. This left us only with only the 21+ venues as options.
Among those options, Jambalaya is one of the best possible places for an event like this to happen. They book months in advance, so getting in there is a blessing for us.
This is the sad part.
Their license to sell alcohol depends on them obeying the law. Asking them to risk that for us is absolutely out of the question. We may have given a different idea when the event was first announced, but as the details of the arrangement became more clear, this is just not a risk that anyone can take.
Now for a little hope...
This is a going to be a 'very cool' event for the 21+ community. People will come to have a good time, drink, and to hear new music. Everyone of those people will be supporting KRFH with a direct cash contribution. All the proceeds will be donated to KRFH. This is a good thing, and much needed now that our web bills have been paid. [Thanks Zoe and the JMC :-)]
I hope to get everybody on board and support this event, even though its not being produced for us as an audience. KRFH.NET's survival and growth will depend on stepping out into the immediate community and not only asking for support, but sharing what we have to offer. Even of you can't get in next Thursday, you are very much a part of the Heart & Soul of Radio Free Humboldt.
In return for your upmost support we as a staff will put on two events specifically for us. The first one is the 4/19 gathering and the last class meeting will be at E&O lanes in Blue Lake (pending availability, cross your fingers). Both of these events will be a lot of fun.
Finally, if you are still upset...sometimes thats just the feeling you need to step up and do something about it. We are very conditioned to think of frustration as a negative feeling, but in the end it always results in a better process or a better person. But, we have to be willing to take a step.
Blessings and Massive Respect,
Your Station Manager, Dub Cowboy
